How Long Should Your Carpet Last?

Carpeting and area rugs give any room a warm feel.  Their rich colors and soft textures excite your senses and make you feel comfortable and at home.  But the beauty and life of your carpet depends on the type of carpet you choose and the care it receives.

Just how long should a well-cared for carpet last?  Amazingly, there are some very well-cared for Oriental Rugs that are over 100 years old.  According to DuPont studies, though, the average life of a carpet is 12.4 years.

There are actually some incredible new carpeting products available that offer amazing durability and life-expectancy, such as Mohawk’s SmartStrand Silk and SmartStrand Ultra, which both provide 25 year warranties for texture retention, fade resistance, and abrasive wear and lifetime full pet warranties.  Both of these lines are extremely luxurious and durable (and affordable), making for a carpeting experience that everyone should have.

If you are looking for something more traditional, there are some great options available, such as Wear-Dated nylon carpeting, which also offers attractive durability, with 20 year texture retention, fade resistance, and abrasive wear warranties, and a lifetime pet urine warranty.

To determine the actual life-expectancy of your carpet, check out your manufacturer’s warranty. We will talk more about how you should care for your carpet to maximize that warranty in future posts. Oh, and if you are curious about that silk carpeting, you should visit your local carpet store and ask for SmartStrand Silk. Be forewarned, though, once you feel it and see how easy it is to clean, nothing else will compare. Your toes will fall in love and you will be hooked.
